How to Surrender a Horse

Surrendering a horse is a tough decision to make. Like many horse sanctuaries, we often run at full capacity. If we can, we are willing to help people who need to surrender an equine or provide information to help you if our facility is at capacity.

Our first responsibility is to rehabilitate and care for the horses already at our facility, then evaluate each surrender application based on available space and level of need. We appreciate your understanding.

Horse Surrendering Process

When determining whether to take a horse on surrender, we consider the owner’s situation and focus our attention on horses at the greatest risk.

  • Surrender fee. There is a fee for every horse that is surrendered. When we receive a horse, it is evaluated by a veterinarian, tested for diseases, and given vaccinations, along with any other medical care needed. All this effort takes time and resources, so we ask for a fee to help with the costs.
  • Transportation. If you can transport the horse yourself, please do so. If not, we recommend looking into other options for transportation. We are a busy facility and can offer transportation recommendations if necessary.
  • Surrender Policies. All equine surrenders are final after the owner has signed the paperwork. You are no longer responsible for the horse or able to make any decision for its care. Our goal is to have every horse in our facility adopted or sponsored. If the evaluation process finds that the horse is not adoptable or is in need of a last act of kindness, we will follow our veterinarian’s advice on any end-of-life decisions.
